Star Trek Beginnings: New Frontier

From Trekspert

Star Trek Beginnings: New Frontier is a fan fiction series that takes place between 2037 and 2063, featuring the events leading up to the creation of the first warp drive and the First Contact. This series predates any other Star Trek series, covering the time before humanity's ability to travel at warp speeds. The series follows Professor Jason Denelder, Sr., a professor of quantum mechanics at the New England School of Technology in the mid-21st century. The series was succeeded by its spinoff, Star Trek Beginnings: Phoenix II, which began airing after the last season of New Frontier.

[edit] Synopsis

[edit] Season One (2037-2039)

The Season begins with the launch of the Charybdis amidst the background of World War III. Centering around the actions of Professor Jason Denelder and his family in Lincoln, Maine at the New England School of Technology, the first season introduced the main characters of the series. Thirteen episodes were ordered, including the pilot episode, A Glimmer of Hope, and ratings were initially high but dwindled toward the end of the season as there was little direct action. Each episode dealt with the effects of the war raging around them, and focused on developing the technology that would allow mankind to explore outside the solar system.

[edit] Season Two (2042-2043)

After the poor ratings of the first season, Paramour Studios was only willing to order a second season of eight episodes to "wrap up the story and give it an end." Half of the first season cast was dropped and only a few new characters introduced in an attempt to center the episodes around the core group. The episodes themselves were given more action with a new antagonist, Colonel Phillip Green and his eco-terrorists. The story line centered around attacks against the college by the eco-terrorists in an attempt to stop the advancement of technology, especially in space exploration. Ratings during this season improved dramatically, leading Paramour to agree to another season.

[edit] Season Three (2045-2047)

Shortly after the end of the second season, Paramour ordered eight more episodes for a third season. Once again replacing most of the cast, the third season focused on the struggle between the college staff and agents of the Eastern Coalition attempting to steal technological secrets. By this time, World War III was beginning to wind down, but the Eastern Coalition was still powerful enough to send agents into the United States to smuggle valuable information out and perform sabotage. Ratings remained fairly high and the show began to garner a following. Shortly before the end of the season, a rumor that Zefram Cochrane would be portrayed in the following season was leaked, sparking even more interest in the series and convincing Paramour to order thirteen episodes for season four.

[edit] Season Four (2050-2051)

Even by the third season, several of the continuing cast members required extensive makeup and costuming to portray their characters, as the storyline of the series jumped several years between each season. Although accurate in the first season, thirteen years of story had passed in the previous three years. Series executive producer Hank Jackson decided to write the character of Dr. August Garrety out of the series before the start of the fourth season and replaced Thomas Wilton and Christine Barts with older actors. Joann Myers was retained for the fourth season, but spent three hours in makeup before filming everyday.

Season four introduced Zefram Cochrane, future inventor of the warp drive, as a student at the New England School of Technology. With thirteen episodes ordered, longer story arcs were allowed to develop, including a two part continuation in mid-season. The writers were faced with difficulty as World War III was in its last few years by this point, and a new antagonist had to be found. The storyline centered around a lack of funding and the growing demands by the military for weapon development rather than astronautical development. The two part continuation dealt with Professor Jason Denelder's journey to Cambridge, Massachusetts to assist with the advancement of toroidal space-time distortion. Despite the introduction of Cochrane, ratings again fell throughout the season and the series was on the varge of cancellation when the season ended. However, Paramour decided to order a last season of eight episodes to air during the summer season of 2012.

[edit] Season Five (2053)

After a weak fourth season, the producers decided to expand outside of the confines of the New England School of Technology in the fifth season. Finally replacing Joann Myers and a few other cast members, this season centered around the end of World War III and the rehabilitation of the United States in the aftermath. The lawlessness and tyranny that marked the post-war era set the tone for a darker side to the series as two of the new characters would have agendas of their own outside of the public good. Zefram Cochrane reappeared in his last year at the school, leaving in the seventh episode to start his own research in Montana.

Season five proved to be another salvation season for the series as ratings improved and Paramour approved another season of eight episodes. Despite the continuation of the series, however, up to this point it had never become popular with Star Trek fans, who claimed it was too far from the original programs to display a likeness to the Star Trek universe. To encourage even higher ratings in the sixth season, this season ended with a cliffhanger.

[edit] Season Six (2056-2057)

In an attempt to breathe new life into a declining series, the focus shifted from external conflicts to action set in space. A new organization, the New England School of Technology Astronautics Operation, is introduced as the vehicle driving the development of faster-than-light space travel. Throughout the season, the main characters take their work into space as they develop a ship capable of traveling at warp speeds. Although they never reach this goal during season six, ratings were sufficient to earn a seventh season with ten episodes.

[edit] Season Seven (2059-2061)

The seventh season continued the storyline of the development of warp drive capability, with much of the action taking place aboard an early starship. Ratings declined from the sixth season, but remained sufficient to earn a final eighth season of eight episodes. Most of the previous seasons main characters played only small roles in this season as their age was factored in. The plot began to focus on the character of Jason Denelder III, who would later go on to a supporting role in the main cast of Star Trek Beginnings: Phoenix II.

[edit] Season Eight (2063)

The final season of New Frontiers was the most popular, receiving the highest ratings of the series. Set in 2063, it consisted of eight episodes in which the action transferred to Montana in the fourth episode to cover the successful launch of the Phoenix, the first Earth starship capable of warp speed. In this season, conflict arises with the introduction of General Zachary Moore, a United States Air Force officer who believed that the military should be the only entity possessing warp capability. The last episode, in which First Contact with the Vulcans is initiated, was the most popular single episode of the series, with an estimated 6.1 million viewers.
